Shipping, Receiving, and Custodial Supervisor


Primary responsibilities
The Shipping, Receiving, and Custodial Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the inflow of all merchandise that enters MSU Bookstore, Inc. as well as for overseeing the general appearance, maintenance, and cleanliness of the Bookstore. This position is essential to assuring that merchandise coming into and going out of the Bookstore is processed in a timely and accurate manner.

This is accomplished by hiring and training employees and monitoring the quality of their performance, along with helping to develop the strategic direction for the department; including maintaining the department budget and developing the yearly goals and objectives. The incumbent will be dynamic; having strong interpersonal skills, a desire to learn, educate, and embrace the mission of a not-for-profit, independent, cooperative bookstore.

In addition to driving department strategy, the Shipping, Receiving, and Custodial Supervisor oversees the shipping and receiving process, including pricing, packing slip reconciliation, and returns. Additionally, the department is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and visually appealing store front, which is accomplished through daily custodial duties as well as overseeing the stock levels of first aid kits and supplies for emergencies within the Bookstore.

Position requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Commitment to the MSU Bookstore team and mission, and the ability to lead the Shipping, Receiving, and Custodial Supervisor department staff to support the mission of MSU Bookstore
• Ability to build partnerships both in store and on campus
• Strong communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to protect the investments of MSU Bookstore merchandise when dealing with receiving, returns, and claims
• Ability to work independently in a high-stress, fast-paced environment, meeting required deadlines
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
• Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
• Willingness to put team above self in all situations
• Ability to pass a background check

Duties
Shipping/Receiving:
• Receive and check-in stock from loading dock, noting damage, overages, and shortages
• Price merchandise, verify information on invoices and internal documents for accuracy
• Contact shippers for pick-ups, reporting damaged stock, and filing claims
• Train temporary and work study students in correct pricing methods
• Communicate with staff regarding errors, corrections, and omissions of data and information
• Answer phones
• Prepare returns to vendors
• Supervise workers checking-in and pricing stock and processing returns
• Resolve shipping/receiving problems and questions with appropriate departments
• Inventory department supplies and equipment and order as necessary
• Coordinate with departments to hire temporary help as needed
• Ensure that equipment is properly maintained and in working order
• Prepare mail and merchandise for shipping from Bookstore, completing special forms (FedEx, overnight, customs) as required
• Schedule staff to answer phones and check-in stock
• Provide assistance to front desk and merchandise areas for rush and inventory

Custodial:
• Empty and clean (as needed) all trash receptacles and dump into dumpsters
• Vacuum store carpeting, including sales floor, cash register areas, offices, break room
• Wash windows and sills; dust blinds and base boards
• Sweep and mop computer storeroom, textbook and clothing storage areas, hallways, upper landing and stairs to employee entrance
• Clean break room cabinets, sink, counters
• Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
• Spot clean carpet, walls, doors, etc.
• Order cleaning supplies, lights, etc. as needed
• Maintain cleaning equipment, repairing as necessary
• Pick up litter on floor
• Other duties as assigned

Course Materials Assistant Manager

Primary responsibilities:
The Course Materials Assistant Manager assists the Course Materials Manager in leading the course materials department and its staff. In this role, the Course Materials Assistant Manager maintains responsibility helping to drive the day-to-day operational direction for the department; including the Bobcat Book Reserve (our course materials reservation program), course materials receiving, rental programs, and implementing the yearly goals and objectives developed by the Course Materials Manager. The incumbent will be dynamic; having strong interpersonal skills, a desire to learn, educate, and embrace the mission of a not-for-profit, independent, cooperative bookstore.

In addition to driving department strategy, the Course Materials Assistant Manager assists with the course materials adoption process, returns, buyback, compliance, and all other facets of the course materials process in MSU Bookstore. This position oversees the Course Materials department in the absence of the Course Materials Manager and serves as the primary contact for customer relations and case management.


Position requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years’ progressive experience in a course materials department with full time and student staff, preferably in a large-store environment
• Commitment to the MSU Bookstore team and mission, and the ability to support the mission of MSU Bookstore and lead others in support of that mission
• A commitment to implementing industry best-practices at MSU Bookstore
• Ability to build partnerships both in-store and on-campus
• Strong communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to communicate the mission of MSU Bookstore to students, faculty, and staff
• Demonstrated understanding of the issues and opportunities facing institutions of higher education and the ability to communicate how MSU Bookstore can help faculty address those areas
• Ability to work independently in a high-stress, fast-paced environment, meeting required deadlines
• Demonstrated creativity and ability to rapidly adapt/anticipate changing market conditions
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
• Demonstrated knowledge of textbook reservations processes, ordering, and receiving
• Demonstrated knowledge of POS systems and textbook management software
• Understanding of textbook financial models, GAAP, profit and loss, and budgeting processes
• Understanding of non-traditional course materials models including e-books, rental (in-house or with multi-partner), inclusive access/LMS integration, OER, and securing copyright for digitizing, with a willingness to embrace and develop alternative models as the opportunity arises
• Knowledge of HEA as it applies to the course materials requirements on campus
• Ability to understand and create high-level sell-through, sales forecast, adoption timeline, and profitability reporting, and an understanding of rental accounting models
• Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
• Travel for 1-3 weeks per year for conferences and training
• Willingness to put team above self in all situations


Preferred requirements

• Familiarity with NetSuite and database platforms
• Knowledge/experience using VERBA tools
• Knowledge/experience using Redshelf
• Experience working in a 501(c3) non-profit corporation or Co-op
• Experience with various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
